EPA recommends boiling and or filtering your water. You could treat with iodine tablets as well, but this won't remove chemical contaminants. Do your research. You are solely responsible for your health.

Remember freshwater lakes, streams and rivers can contain harmful bacteria and protozoa. Don't risk it. Boil water to a rolling boil for 1-2 minutes before using for cooking, washing dishes or brushing teeth. You may filter with paper coffee filters or a cloth. You can also use iodine tablets to help kill unwanted bacteria. EPA recommendations here: https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/emergency-disinfection-drinking-water

Portable water treatment tablets are effective against bacteria and Giardia lamblia, for trusted emergency water purification. Please follow instructions carefully. This is a well known product that can kill bacteria if used appropriately.

If you plan on doing some water sports while camping in the Allagash, it's a good idea to have a dry sak for keeping devices and clothes dry. This one is reasonably priced and well reviewed.
